Media Release: Washington State Animal Welfare Leaders Partner to Save More Pets' Lives

July 24, 2018

Eleven animal welfare public and private leaders have partnered to launch Pet Alliance of Washington, a coalition to increase the lifesaving efforts of organizations in Washington State that provide care for stray, neglected and abused cats and dogs. With help from Best Friends, a national organization with extensive experience improving animal outcomes, the Pet Alliance of Washington is committed to achieving a combined 90% live release rate for cats and dogs in Washington State by 2020, and helping all participating agencies to reach an individual live release rate of 90% by 2025.

Recognizing many of the issues facing the animal welfare industry can benefit from a collaborative and regional approach, the coalition's strategies to boost pet save rates and improve outcomes include mentoring Pet Alliance member organizations on model programs, grant funding, and direct action. "This launch is a promising step towards saving and serving pets in need by coming together as one. As private and public entities, we recognize the need to lean on each other in supporting pet and animal welfare organizations in Washington State." said David Loewe, CEO of Seattle Humane and Chair of the Pet Alliance of Washington.

In July, the Pet Alliance of Washington will pilot its fellowship program with Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) and its allied shelter and nonprofit partners.

The Pet Alliance of Washington's board consists of the following recognized leaders in our area: Seattle Humane (SH), Humane Society for SW Washington (HSSW), Blue Mountain Humane Society, Kitsap Humane Society, Pasado’s Safe Haven, Northwest Spay and Neuter Center, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC), Wenatchee Valley Humane Society, South County Cats, Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS), and Best Friends Animal Society (Best Friends).
